Artist Statement

The parking lot at the 7-11 in my neighborhood is an all-you-can-eat buffet for squirrels. This young fellow found himself a chunk of cookie, and ran with it.

I caught this moment on one of my long walks in the glorious Pandemic Spring of 2020. I had been taking leisurely shots of bees and rabbits a-frolic, and so my camera was already in rapid-fire burst mode when I got to the 7-11. Taking hundreds of pictures every few minutes is soothing for some reason.

As the squirrel ran with the cookie firmly in its mouth, I followed the action with a long burst and caught this epic leap. It’s one of my favorite shots of anything, ever, anywhere. I put the camera away for the day after this one, and basked in the warm glow of winning.
